The charitable arm of New York-based Verizon Communications is making $105,000 in grants to promote math and science learning in Inland schools. A news release said Verizon Foundation is working with UC Riverside's Bourns College of Engineering and the statewide Mathematics Engineering and Science Achievement (MESA) program.

About 400 middle-school students from five area school districts will storm Cal State Fullerton Wednesday, Feb. 25, followed by a second wave of 350 high-schoolers from four districts a week later on March 4. Flamson: school committed to meeting the needs of its student population

No school site suffered more as a result of the San Simeon earthquake than Flamson Middle School...But as construction continues, and school officials target the fall of the 09-10 school year as the opening date for the new building, there is a sense of excitement on the campus.

...Flamson has an array of offerings for students, including art and drama, Gifted and Talented Education activities and a sports program that features volleyball, basketball, wrestling and track.

Another thriving program at Flamson is the Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement, or MESA, program. Led by teacher Ayen Johnson, the program is aimed at getting students interested in math and science through classroom activities and competitions.

Monroe MESA Team scores big at JPL challenge

Aspiring students from Monroe Magmet Middle School achieved second place at the JPL (Jet Propulsion Laboratory) Invention Challenge Finals held December 12 in Pasadena.

The win by the Monroe MESA team was quite a feat considering their competition included 22 high schools, 2 middle schools and 12 JPL engineers.

A program director at Chico State was right in the middle of all the excitement during the inaugural parade Tuesday.  Paul Villegas is the director for MESA, the Math, Engineering and Science Achievement Program at Chico State.  He is also a major in the U.S. Army, and a member of the U.S. Armed Forces Inauguration Committee.

Verizon donates sum to City College

Santa Barbara City College (SBCC) received a sizable donation on Friday from Verizon Communications that school officials hope will benefit students majoring in math, engineering, and science. Holly Cole, Verizon’s director of Government & External Affairs for Santa Barbara and Ventura counties, presented Barbara Ben-Horin with a check for $22,500 that will go specifically to SBCC’s MESA program.

Roxanne Acosta is a second year civil engineering major attending California State University, Los Angeles (Cal State L.A.).  The potential of imagination, creativity, and the yearning for development were the roots to Roxanne’s inspiration for becoming a civil engineer.

State Board of Education Recognizes Mendota Students Place First In National Engineering Competition

The State Board of Education(SBE) recognized a student team from the rural community of Mendota who took first place in a national engineering design competition.

McCabe Junior High School students Adelmo Alvarado, Edgar Juarez, Francisco Torres and Angel Hernandez beat teams from across the country to win first place in the junior high school division of the competition, which was sponsored by the Mathematics, Engineering, and Science Achievement (MESA) program.

The engineering project of four junior high students has launched them -- literally -- into a national competition in Baltimore.

The McCabe Junior High School students designed and built their state championship multitasking trebuchet, which is similar to a catapult. They will display their trebuchet when they compete at the Mathematics Engineering Science Achievement national finals Friday and Saturday.

With cool white vapors of liquid nitrogen spilling across the lab table, a group wearing white laboratory coats and goggles gathered around to watch Robert Payawal make a magnet float in mid air.

The lab coats were worn by eight Mathematics Engineering Science Achievement students at Solano Community College taking part in a weeklong academy aimed at uncovering the mystery behind super- conductivity and magnetics.
