Hearst Foundation funds teacher training

MESA has received a $70,000 grant from the William Randolph Hearst Foundation to fund teacher professional development for grade 5–9 mathematics teachers in the Sacramento and Stockton areas. MESA’s Northern California Teacher Professional Development Institute will partner mathematics teacher-trainers with MESA teachers from schools throughout the two regions. The teacher-trainers consist of distinguished faculty members of the UC Davis Math Project who specialize in K–12 state standards-based curriculum and pedagogy. The weeklong institute, to be held this summer, will reach up to 40 mathematics instructors and up to 6,000 educationally disadvantaged students. Nearly two-thirds of the schools served by the program are officially designated as underperforming by the California Department of Education, based on average Academic Performance Index (API)
test scores.
